Black bean extract now in business

The European Commission last month authorised Cantox Health Sciences' application to market fermented black bean extract - which can be used to slow the breakdown of carbohydrates - as a novel food ingredient under European Regulation No 258/97.

Fermented black bean extract is a fine light-brown protein-rich powder obtained by water extraction of small soybeans fermented with Aspergllus oryzae. It contains an a-glucosidase inhibitor.

It can now be placed on the market as a novel ingredient in food supplements with a maximum intake of 4.5g a day.
