Thorntons has recalled its Dark Chocolate Easter Egg with a Personalised Iced Message, because the icing contained milk that was not mentioned on the label and this could present a health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents.

The recall was issued last week and reported on the Food Standards Agency’s (FSA’s) website on Thursday (March 30). It followed a recall of By Sainsbury’s Vegetable Sushi Snack Pack containing undeclared tuna and prawns in the same week and recalls for various other confectionery products for undecalred allergens earlier in the month.

Thorntons recall

For the Thorntons recall, the FSA advised consumers who had bought these products and had an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents not to eat them. Instead, they were advised to return them to the store from where they were bought for a full refund.

No other Thorntons products were known to be affected by the recall.

As is usual in such allergen-related recalls, the FSA advised Thorntons to contact the relevant allergy support organisations so that they could inform their members about the recall. Thorntons also issued a point-of-sale notice to its retail customers to explain why the product was being recalled and informed them what to do had they bought the product.

Sushi Snack Pack

Sainsbury’s recall of its By Sainsbury’s Vegetable Sushi Snack Pack was because it contained tuna and prawns that were not mentioned on the label. This meant the product was a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to fish or crustaceans.

No other Sainsbury products were known to be affected.

Once again, the FSA’s advice to consumers that had bought these products and had an allergy to fish or crustaceans, was not eat them and, instead, return them to the store from where they were bought for a full refund.

The Thorntons Easter Egg recall followed a number other recalls associated with undeclared allergens in confectionery products issued last month.

Lindt & Sprüngli recalled two Easter chocolate eggs due to undeclared barley. Another recall came from Seasalt Cornwall for two chocolate bars, which contained egg that was not labelled on the ingredients list. And a further recall was made by Kenrow Chocolate for its Eton Mess Chocolate and Lemon Meringue chocolate bars, also because they contained undeclared egg.

In other areas, Tesco was also forced to recall its Oriental Kitchen Chicken Chow Mein due to undeclared egg, milk and mustard, while sandwich brand Best Fresh recalled six of its products after they were found to contain undeclared allergens, including barley, milk, celery and sulphites.
