The Real Lancashire Black Pudding Company has recalled black pudding slices because the wrong use by date was printed on the labels.

The black pudding slices went past their actual use by date on New Year’s eve, but the packaging said the use by date was not until January 31 2016.

Meat should not be eaten after the use by date because it poses a risk to health, even if the product looks and smells fine, according to the Food Standards Agency.

The recall notice, issued today (January 5), said 230g packs of black pudding, with batch code 4204, were the only products being withdrawn.

‘Dating error on 230g packs’

“We are conducting a voluntary recall on our black pudding slices after discovering that there is a dating error on the 230g retail packs,” the notice said.

An employee of the Real Lancashire Black Pudding Company said the Haslingden firm was sorting out the problem and all the key information was contained in the recall notice.

The breakfast staple has been touted as one the key superfoods for 2016. Darren Beale, from MuscleFood.com, described the trend as a “total surprise”.

Meanwhile on Christmas eve, upmarket department store Harrods recalled a Sèvre & Belle brand cheese because it was contaminated with food poisoning bug E. coli.

Made from unpasteurised milk

The cheese, named Chevrot Au Lait Cru, was made from unpasteurised milk. The 200g packs had a use by date of January 4 2016 and a lot number of 152932110.

“We have been advised by the Food Standards Agency to recall this product due to a potential health concern reported by the manufacturer,” Harrods said in its recall notice.

“Please be reassured that customer health, safety and satisfaction remain our top priorities.”
