Tesco and Sainsbury have recalled a number of their own-label pasta products, after the Food Standards Agency (FSA) declared the products, manufactured by Belgian firm Noliko, might contain pieces of rubber.

The products included Sainsbury’s Beef Ravioli in Tomato Sauce, Sainsbury’s Macaroni Cheese, Tesco Beef Ravioli and Tesco Everyday Value Beef Ravioli.

The FSA said: “The products may contain rubber. This means these products are a possible risk to health.”

Noliko specialises in fruit and vegetables, but also manufactures ready-to-eat products, including soup, sauces and pasta dishes.

‘Optimal product safety’

The Noliko website said: “Quality assurance is a critical part of our operations. Our clients can rely on optimal product safety.

“The daily adherence with European and other regulations is an integral part of the activities of our team of highly qualified personnel.”

FoodManufacture.co.uk contacted Noliko for comment.

A Sainsbury spokesman said: “We apologise for the inconvenience this has caused.

“As a precautionary measure, we are asking all customers who have bought these products not to consumer them, and to return it to their nearest Sainsbury’s store where they will receive a full refund.”

A Tesco spokesman said: “We have been made aware that a small number of Tesco ravioli cans may contain pieces of rubber due to a manufacturing fault.

‘Precautionary measure’

“As a precautionary measure, we are recalling affected date and batch codes from customers.”

Both retailers said no other products were known to be affected by the contamination.

News of the recalled pasta is the latest in a number of product recalls on fears of contamination. In June, Asda recalled its Asda 4 Vegetarian Vegetable Burgers, on fears the product might contain pieces of non-edible hard green plastic.

Earlier this year, Mars recalled millions of products across 55 countries on fears they might contain pieces of plastic. The recall affected Mars six pack chocolate bars, and Snickers six pack chocolate bars.
