The FSA is uncertain what caused the outbreak but has identified a potential link to watermelons, the agency said.
The outbreak was first detected in December 2011, with more illnesses reported at the end of January. The person who died had underlying health complications, said the FSA.
Health Protection Agency
Alison Gleadle, director of food safety at the FSA, said: “We’ve been notified by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) about the outbreak of illness caused by a particular strain of Salmonella Newport. We are monitoring the situation and working closely with the European Commission, other countries, local authorities and the food industry, to investigate further.”
Meanwhile, consumers should follow good food hygiene practices, such as washing fruits and vegetables before consumption, to reduce the risk of possible illness, she added.
