Food and drink products contaminated with plastic and glass accounted for two of eight recalls last week.

Kettle Foods recalled its Kettle Chips products, on fears they may contain pieces of plastic. The recall affected five products with a 'best before' date of 28 May 2016.

The products were: Kettle Chips Lightly Salted in 150g bags, Kettle Chips Sea Salt & Balsamic Vinegar in 40g bags, Kettle Chips Mature Cheddar & Red Onion in 40g bags, Kettle Chips Lightly Salted Multipack and Kettle Chips Lightly Salted in 30g bags.

Possible contamination with glass fragments forced the recall of Aston Manor Cider’s Chardolini Sparkling Perry 75cl.

The manufacturer said the recall – affecting products with lot codes of L27105N3 and L5328N3 – was because: “The product may contain small fragments of glass at the bottom of the bottle. This means the product is a possible risk to health.”

Contamination with Listeria

Five other products were recalled on fears of contamination with Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella, the presence of sulphur dioxide, the lack of an ingredients list and the undeclared presence of milk.

Sainsbury recalled a number of its Camembert products due to presence of Listeria monocytogenes. The recall affected products with use by dates up to and including March 6 2016.

“Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause foodborne illness, particularly among vulnerable groups – these are pregnant women, unborn and new-born babies, those over 60 years old and anyone with a weakened immune system,” according to the Food Standards Agency.

Products affected included: Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference French Camembert Cheese in 250g packs, Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Baking Camembert Cheese in 250g packs and Sainsbury’s Camembert Pays in 250g packs.

Fears of Salmonella contamination prompted Lytham Foods to recalls its Chicken Tikka Sandwiches.

The manufacturer said it was recalling its Taylors of Lytham Chicken Tikka Sandwiches, due to the possible presence of Salmonella in the tikka powder ingredient used to manufacture this product.

Presence of Salmonella

P&B (Foods) recalled its Heera Premium Quality Golden Bread Crumbs because there is no ingredients list on the product. The product contains wheat, which means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to wheat or intolerance to gluten.

The recall affected products with pack sizes of 3kg, 1kg and 400g.

Chef’s Kitchen has withdrawn its Premium Quality Style Port and Premium Quality Style Madeira because the products contain sulphur dioxide, which is not mentioned on the packaging. That meant the products were a possible health risk for anyone with a sensitivity to sulphur dioxide or sulphites.

Asco Foods recalled three batches of Leslie’s Clover Chips barbecue flavour corn snack, due to the presence of milk, which is not mentioned on the ingredients list. The product also contained soya, which was not correctly labelled.

The omissions mean the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents and/or an allergy to soya.

Wiper and True withdrew its bottles of Citrus and Sevens Indian Pale Ale beer – sold in 330ml and 500ml bottles – due to the presence of lactose which is not declared on the labelling, resulting in the undeclared presence of a milk ingredient.
