Metal shard fears spark Boots sushi recall
Boots has been forced to recall sushi that may contain metal shards, shortly after Premier Foods withdrew gravy granule tubs due to fears over similar metal contamination.

The pharmacy chain cleared Shapers and Strand Super Duper sushi packs off the shelves after having discovering a fault in the manufacturing process.

“We have identified a manufacturing fault affecting two different date codes of the above listed products that may results in the presence of small metal pieces,” Boots said in a notice.

The recalled sushi packages had use by dates of Thursday (September 17) and Friday (September 18).

  • Salmon sushi – 191g
  • Nigiri Sushi – 232g

Recall after production fault

Last week Premier Foods also blamed a production fault for the recall of 170g tubs containing Bisto for Chicken Gravy Granules and Reduced Salt Bisto for Chicken Gravy Granules.

“After some maintenance there was a fault which occurred in a filler bowl on the production line and there was some rubbing against the metal bolts, and that is what created this issue,” a spokesman told FoodManufacture.co.uk.

On Wednesday (September 16) Asda announced the recall of pots of beetroot, priced 99p, due to concerns about a bacteria which causes a rare but potentially fatal illness called botulism.

‘May cause rare illness’

“The Asda Chosen by You Pickled Crinkle Cut Beetroot 710g is being recalled as there may be a potential risk of Clostridium botulinum contamination,” Asda said in a notice.

“This may cause a rare illness if consumed.”

Meanwhile, avoiding costly product recalls will be one of the subjects covered at the Food Manufacture Group’s one-day food safety conference later this month.

The conference will examine the latest developments to ensure food safety from the farm, through manufacture and the supply chain, to products and packaging on sale.

Taking place at the Lowry in Manchester on Tuesday September 29, the event will provide the latest information on what more the industry can do to reassure consumers about the safety and authenticity of the food they eat.
