Manufacturers fall at the first foodborne safety hurdle

30-May-2012

Sir, I was intrigued to read an article in a recent edition of Food Manufacture regarding foodborne illnesses.

Do food manufacturers really expect their low-paid workforce to take time off sick when they have a tummy bug or other such related sickness? I would guess that the vast majority of this workforce are on minimum wage and do not get sick pay, hence they cannot afford to stay away from the workplace when they are sick. Consequently, we can invest in all manner of technologies and systems to try to ensure food safety, but, for me, we are falling at the very first hurdle truly caring for our colleagues who play a central role in our businesses. Surely there has to be a better way?
