Lidl is the latest supermarket to be hit by recalls after being forced to withdraw chicken thighs due to a labelling error by one of its suppliers.

The recall comes after Asda withdrew its buttery spread because of plastic contamination fears and the Co-operative recalled its chicken and chorizo paella due to incorrect labelling this month.

Lidl UK recalled the Italiamo chicken products this week because the wrong use by date – saying the chicken would last more than a year – was printed on packaging.

‘Supplier labelling error’

“Due to a supplier labelling error, Lidl UK is recalling all stock of Italiamo Italian Style Chicken Thighs, 450g, with a use by date of December 16 2016,” its recall notice said.

Italiamo chicken thighs with different use by dates were not included in the recall.

A Lidl spokesman said the discounter recalled “very few” packs and identified the supplier as Eurostock.

The error occurred at the supplier end. As a result, we have withdrawn the product from sale and FSA recall has been issued,” she said.

“This has been done as a precaution, and there is no immediate risk.”

Meanwhile, Mo’s Cookie Dough also withdrew ‘bake your own’ chilled chocolate chip, oatmeal and raisin and gingerbread cookie dough products this week.

Intolerance to gluten

The ingredients list on the packets failed to mention that wheat was used to make the flour, posing a risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to gluten.

In May Lidl recalled its XXL Tortelloni with Spinach and Ricotta after it was discovered the product contained egg, milk and gluten, which were not declared in English on the label.

The month after Lidl recalled its Kania Crispy Fried Onions because the product included wheat, containing gluten, which was also not mentioned on the label in English.

Posted by mary Collins,

Does someone have to become seriously ill and be able to complain before these stores recall their products?
It's frightening.
What happens to shoppers who don't even think that products maybe recalled therefore eat what they have in the house and possibly become ill.
I am an older person, I use the internet. This morning was checking if the store has a product I wish to buy or order. I was shocked to see recalled products, even more shocked at the reasons for recall.
