Insight into the latest food safety scientific and technological developments and an understanding about the complexity of the food supply chain will be the key topics under discussion at the Food Manufacture Group’s Food safety conference tomorrow (September 29).

That’s according to the conference’s chairman and president of the US Institute of Food Technologists Professor Colin Dennis, speaking ahead of the ‘Safer food and drink – from the harvest to the home’ conference at the Lowry in Manchester.

Delegates will receive the latest information on the “dynamic series of links” that contribute to the safe and effective production of food safe food, Dennis told FoodManufacture.co.uk.

Safe food was dependent on these links working together and in harmony, Dennis added.

Safe and authentic food

“The conference will also serve to remind delegates of the meticulous attention to detail which is required at each stage of the supply chain to achieve safe and authentic food,” he said.

“I am confident that the conference will further highlight the need for collaboration and partnership between government, industry and consumers in responding to present and future challenges around food safety and authenticity.”

Food safety conference – points for debate

  • Supply chain complexity
  • Scientific and technological developments
  • Food Crime Unit
  • Consumers’ concerns
  • Developments in data collection and handling
  • Information gathering

Dennis said there was a need to ensure an integrated approach to food safety along the supply chain, from raw material production to the handling and use of products by the consumer.

Scientific and technological developments

Key messages would be the latest scientific, technological and management developments which can contribute to improved procedures, practices and systems for achieving safe food, Dennis said.

A greater insight into the role and activities of the new Food Crime Unit, intelligence gathering and consumers’ food safety concerns would also all be provided to those attending the one-day conference.

“Greater insight and understanding about consumers’ concerns around food safety and authenticity and how these can be used to better communicate science, evidence and information to consumers,” he added.

Last week, Dennis said food safety was a fundamental area of concern for all food and drink manufacturers that needed critical conferences – like the Food safety conference – to help debate between industry and government.
