Britain’s processed food sector has come under much flak this year from the ‘horsegate’ scandal. While, food safety concerns were initially raised about possible exposure to the veterinary drug phenylbutazone, the contamination of horsemeat in products such as beef burgers and ready meals, did not actually present a big food safety risk. However, it did highlight serious instances of adulteration and mislabelling, plus failures in ingredient traceability and provenance – and fraudulent practices – which have direct relevance to the contamination of foodstuffs with chemicals and other pathogens that do present a significant risk to consumer health. How do we minimise the chances of another sudan 1 dye or melamine in milk contamination incident – or even a large E.coli O157 outbreak?
