The firm, which has recently appointed ex-Caffè Nero md Jonathan Hart as its new chief executive following a lengthy search to find a replacement for Mike Davies, posted a 3.9% rise in group sales to £83.7m in the 14 weeks to January 8.
Commercial sales [sales to other retailers] surged by 33.7% to £25.m and Thorntons Direct sales rose by 7.6% to £5.1m, but sales at its own stores slumped 6.8% to £48.2m with a like-for-like sales decline of 5.9%.
Franchise sales also decreased by 2.2% to £5.1m over the period, said chairman John von Spreckelsen.
However, Easter orders from commercial customers were looking encouraging, he said. "The Board is cautiously optimistic for the prospects for the current financial year."
Thorntons will announce its interim results for the 28 weeks to January 8 on February 16.
