The trend towards assembly cooking will lead future growth in UK chilled food as individual meal components threaten chilled ready meals, according to research by RTS Resource commissioned by Food Manufacture.
Sales of chilled food products have begun to slow down, the report claims. Such products include prepared salads and fruit snacks; meat and poultry products; chilled meals; pizzas, snacks and sandwiches; fish and seafood products; chilled bakery; yoghurt and desserts and soups and sauces.
The UK market for chilled food is worth £18.7bn, with 3.2Mt consumed in the UK in 2008. In the UK, 53kg of chilled food was consumed per person in 2008.
