PepsiCo UK is pumping £8.5m into its Quaker Oats site in Fife to meet increasing demand for hot cereals, which have grown 13% in the year to March 19 2011, according to Nielsen.

Quaker Oats will benefit from a new state-of-the-art plant based at the Cupar site, helping to boost its oat milling capacity and allow for significantly increased production.

Noticing that porridge had become a more popular all-year round breakfast choice, PepsiCo cited Nielsen data attesting to a rise in sales of Quaker's Oat So Simple.

“[The] range has been driving the company's growth with sales of the product's flavour variants growing by 30% year-on-year. The launch of this range revolutionised the porridge market as it made it easier for people to cook porridge and offered taste variations.

Dedicated milling facility

Quaker Oats general manager David Murray said:"Quaker Oats have been milled at the Cupar site for over 60 years and as we're one of just two manufacturers that still mill our own oats, it's really important for us to continue to invest in the site, so that we can protect this great heritage.

“We've been expanding the site for many years, having added eight production lines since 2002, but this new investment will really help us to continue to feed the incredible consumer demand for porridge as a breakfast choice."

Cupar has produced Quaker Oats since 1947, and also makes Quaker Oats and Scott's Porage Oats, Oat So Simple and Quaker Oat So Simple Pots.
