Up to 1,000 food and drink jobs could be created in Pembrokeshire, after plans were unveiled for a new food park.

The 92,903m2 park – to be located at Withybush Industrial Estate, near Haverfordwest – would be home to food production and cold storage facilities. The park will also have a shared distribution network and transport hub.

Real estate firm Hacer developments, which is leading the project, said the park would be targeted at large-scale vegetable producers, food processing, and dairy product suppliers.

It also hoped to attract smaller-scale outlets and start-up businesses to set up at the site.

Attract new talent

Supporting documents presented to the council said the park would entice young people looking for employment to stay in the area and attract new talent.

Hacer Developments md Carwyn Davies said: “Tourism and food production are two industries synonymous with Pembrokeshire.

“It’s therefore a really exciting project to be working on, that has the potential to create 1,000 jobs whilst at the same time strengthening and supporting the food industry in this part of Wales.”

Davies added that the food park would have a significant impact on the economy and that Hacer would be working closely with the council to deliver the project.

Considerable boost

Pembrokeshire council cabinet member for economy and communities Keith Lewis described the park as an exciting development that would have a considerable boost for the local food industry.

“We are working very hard with Hacer Developments and the Haven Waterway Enterprise Zone on the project, and are extremely hopeful of support from the Welsh government,” said Lewis.

Meanwhile, Nestlé said it would offer at least 3,000 new employment opportunities for young people in the UK and Ireland by 2020 earlier this month, as part of its Nestlé Needs YOUth pledge.

Nestlé UK & Ireland chairman and ceo Fiona Kendrick said: “Nurturing young talent is one of our core beliefs and at the heart of what we do at Nestlé. We have been very privileged to have many young people join us, learn and build lifelong careers with us.”
