Fire crews were called to two incidents at the 2 Sisters-owned R F Brookes factory in Rogerstone, Newport as a precaution, over the past two weeks.

A spokesman for 2 Sisters said that there was a fault identified in a burner system in an oven last week and fire crews were called as a precaution. During its re-commissioning on Tuesday (October 25), a further issue was identified and again, crews were called as a precaution.

Jennie Griffiths, head of Joint Fire Control for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and working with South Wales Police at the Joint Control SWP HQ Bridgend took to twitter and said that crews from Duffryn, Risca and Maindee were called to a fire in Rogerstone.

Her tweets also revealed that all persons were evacuated from the factory in Rogerstone and crews remained on site until 21.49 to ventilate the building.

On October 21, four fire engines attended an incident in Rogerstone after being called at 5.56am.  It was also attended by crews from Malpas, Duffryn and Maindee.

There have been a number of fires at factories during 2016. At the beginning of August, a fire at Ginsters Callington was described as “difficult” by Cornwall Fire & Rescue. Fire crews used breathing apparatus, two hose reel jets and a thermal imaging camera to tackle the fire.

In July, 10 fire engines were called to fight a blaze at 2 Sisters Food Group factory in Thetford, Norfolk.

A fire in a food factory in London’s Park Royal in March was under investigation after forcing the evacuation of 30 employees.
