Two chicken processing businesses have been ordered to pay almost a combined £20,000 in damages and costs to bakery equipment maker Bakers Basco, for using its equipment without permission.

Yorkshire-based firms Al-Ummah Halal Poultry Ltd and Ijaz Halal Poultry Ltd were told to pay Bakers Basco £15,716 and £3,500, respectively, after using its baskets and dollies to move their products. The payments were the latest in a long-line to Bakers Basco for misuse of its equipment, totalling £24,250, since August last year.

Bakers Basco general manager Steve Millwardsaid: “Our baskets and dollies are designed for one sole purpose, and that is to transport bread safely, cost-effectively and in an environmentally-friendly way.

‘Footing the bill’

“When people divert them for their own use, it not only has a knock-on effect on the bakers that pay to license them, but also on retailers and, at the end of the day, Joe Public, all of whom end up footing the bill for the actions of a small minority.”

Bakers Basco had the right to inspect both companies’ premises – without warning – to check for future equipment misuse, Barnsley County Court ordered.

Al-Ummah Halal Poultry and Ijaz Halal Poultry had used the baking distribution equipment without permission previously, the court heard. Al-Ummah Halal Poultry had previously made payments totalling £31,806.53 to Bakers Basco in damages and costs, for similar offences.

Damage payments

Both Al-Ummah Halal Poultry and Ijaz Halal Poultry were unavailable for comment on the damage payments.

Bakers Basco said legal action against companies that were misusing their bread baskets and dollies, was a last resort. If a firm continued to use Bakers Basco property after it asked them to stop, legal action would be taken, it said.

Meanwhile, in February Bakers Basco was paid £5,250 in costs and damages by Bristol-based Anstee’s Bakery. The bakery had used Bakers Basco’s bread baskets without permission.
